“As dean, I am proud and excited for our School of Social Work to host Professor Ibram X. Kendi as a guest speaker in our Centennial Speaker Series,” noted Dean Gary Bowen. “I have read Professor Kendi’s book, “How to Be an Antiracist,” from cover to cover, and it sits on my desk for ready reference.

“His conceptualization of antiracism as an action against racism and systemic oppression, and his proposals for individual and collective action provide guidance and inspiration for a nation looking for a way forward to level the playing field for all and create a just society.”

Kendi is the Andrew W. Melton Professor in the Humanities at Boston University and the founding director of the BU Center for Antiracist Research. He is also the 2020-2021 Frances B. Cashin Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.

A contributing writer at The Atlantic and a CBS news correspondent, Kendi is the author of three #1 New York Times bestsellers: “How to Be an Antiracist,” “Antiracist Baby” and “Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You” (coauthored with Jason Reynolds), which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction. His next book, “Be Antiracist: A Journal for Awareness, Reflection and Action,” was recently released.

This event is part of the School’s Centennial Speakers Series, which connects the School and its broader community with some of the nation’s most inspirational leaders in social justice and antiracism. The Centennial Speakers Series is a signature initiative of the UNC School of Social Work Centennial Celebration (2020-2022).
